2012 Fitness Challenge

Thank You Cloonan Community!

The Cloonan Community really came together to make the first ever Fitness Challenge a tremendous success. The focus of the Challenge was to empower our students to make healthy choices, get moving, and stay active. The students, staff and parent volunteers did just that. Over 600 Cloonan students exercised for over an hour, successfully completing ten fitness stations which included activities such as ladders, slalom running, hurdles, shuttle run, and ending with Zumba. They also learned some helpful tips on the importance of nutrition and good eating habits … all while having a lot of FUN. In addition, students successfully raised almost $6,700 in pledges which will directly benefit Cloonan with 100% of these funds going to support school activities and events.
This team effort is what made the Fitness Challenge such as success. While we could not have done it without the help of Cloonan staff and parent volunteers, we own a special thank you to our Physical Education teachers, Bobbie Jo Barhydt and Meredith Joseph who coordinated the fitness activities and got the students excited about the day.

Thanks also goes to the local Stamford Community who helped to support us.

By now, you should have received the flyer on this fall's FITNESS CHALLENGE in your child's back to school information packet. This is Cloonan's first ever FITNESS CHALLENGE. The purpose of this fundraising event is to have each student successfully complete ten to twelve exercise stations over the course of one hour. Stations will include activities such as ladders, an obstacle course, tire rolls, jogging, and zumba. Similar to a Jog-a-Thon, students should collect pledges to support their participation in the successful completion of this Fitness Challenge.
This Fitness Challenge will include every student at Cloonan and will encourage them all to get moving and stay active. This fun filled event is intended to be Cloonan's major fall fundraiser, taking the place of pie and wrapping paper sales, and as such all pledges raised will go directly to fund school sponsored events. If every student raises $20 or more, we reach our goal of $12,000.
Many parents are needed to help at Scalzi Park on Oct 12th, the day of the Fitness Challenge. Please e-mail Anna Hallett at hallett1@optonline.net or Virginia Prial at vprial@optonline.net if you can help for part or all of the day at fitness activity stations. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

SPEF took 35 students from the Stamford Mentoring Program at Cloonan Middle School on a field trip to the Mill River Park.  They were met at the park by mentors and students in Dr. Monica Miller’s Service Learning Class.  This is was the third activity Dr. Miller’s class has participated in with students in the Mentoring Program this semester.  One of the UConn students, Cindy Newman, sent a thoughtful description of what the day meant to her.

In all, we had about 60 people working on a variety of projects to beautify the park.  Staff from the Mill River Collaborative spoke to the group before the work started about the history of the park, the scope of the long term project and the importance of keeping the park area  clean in order to bring birds, fish and wildlife back into their natural habitat.  They did a great job of coordinating the various projects and making sure our volunteers had all the tools they needed.  Our friend Christina Chiarelli, from ItsRelevant.com, was on hand to capture the spirit of the day.

Scholar Power: Better Food For Todays Future - Eat. Learn. Live.

A group of students at Cloonan showed great interest in nutrition and what’s being served in the cafeteria.  They put together some ideas and met with Chartwells Food Service Director Mr. Al Benjunas and Chartwells Food Service Management team to learn more about the process of feeding students.  A total of 15 enthusiastic 7th graders then signed up to be a part of the focus group … a good cross section of Cloonan.  Their challenge was to eat a different meal every day for 5 days, making sure to include all 5 meal components on their tray.  At the end of the 5 days, the students answered a short survey about their experience.  The Assembly will focus on the group’s finding and all that it takes to feed a school.

CLOONAN ART STUDENTS EXHIBIT at SACKLER GALLERY in DISTRICT-WIDE EXHIBITION

Over 30 Cloonan Middle School Art students participated in a student art exhibition celebrating Black History Month. A reception, open to the general public, was held on Sunday, February 11 in the Sackler Gallery at Stamford's Palace Theater.   This year’s theme, "Healthy, Active and Wise-Make Health a Habit!" explored health and wellness issues as they relate to the African Caribbean or African American cultures. Fitness/activity, healthy eating/hygiene and positive thinking and stress management, were some of the suggested topics.   The show was sponsored by The Stamford Center for the Arts in partnership Picture That, LLC which sponsors the annual event, and a consortium of civic organizations. Next year’s theme, already announced, will focus on The Tuskegee Airmen, and specifically, the Red Tail unit recently depicted in a major motion picture.   Cash awards of $50.00 each, went to several Cloonan eight graders for their acrylic paintings.  All students received a certificate of participation to honor their creativity and hard work.   For more information contact Valerie Cooper at 203-977-8203 (www.picture-that.com)

Judy Altman, Holocaust survivor, spoke at Cloonan on Friday, October 28th, with 8th grade students and had a discussion on the Holocaust and the rippling aftermath.   When asked to write a response to Mrs. Altman's presentation, one student said it perfectly stating,  "In general, the message that I learned from Judy’s life story was to always treat others fairly. By discriminating the Jews, Hitler is considered a bully. So, when people tease others for their race or make an effort to torment them, they are following his example. It is for this reason that Judy doesn’t believe in taking revenge against those who hurt her. She chooses to be the better person and demonstrate positive qualities. Judy sets the bar for all future generations, and everyone should try to develop a personality like her’s to prevent another Holocaust from occurring."  Please click here to read the full response.
